The Art of the Brick is not what I was expecting when No Starch Press asked me to review it. It’s very different from the other LEGO books I’ve read, and I loved it.
Nathan Sawaya has created a lot of LEGO art. I think my favorite piece he’s done is the one featured on the cover. I graduated from the University of Michigan, and I bleed Maize and Blue. I like to think I’d bleed Maize and Blue LEGO bricks though! This book chronicles Nathan’s journey from lawyer to world renowned LEGO builder. It also documents his ways of thinking; how he sees the world. And it documents much of his creative process.
This is why I find this book fascinating.
I am amazed by his bravery. He gave up, what I can only imagine to be a lucrative career, to follow his love of the LEGO brick and his love of creating art. Nathan’s story is inspirational to me. I hope you agree.
The book is full of beautiful pictures of his LEGO art which are accompanied by his thoughts on the piece; where the idea came from, what inspired him, how he did it, etc.
I highly recommend The Art of the Brick this gift giving season, and do not hesitate to rate it 5 out of 5 bricks!
